Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge: the World’s toughest row is coming

2015/12/10

The start of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is getting closer, this year’s edition will have three participants equipped with Solbian solar panels, Matteo Perucchini, Greg Maud and the Atlantic Buoys. Solbian is not new to this kind of challenges, its panels are in fact on board of Doris, the pink rowboat of the Coxless Crew which is currently crossing the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Cairns in Australia.

Of all the participants in the Talisker 2015, Matteo Perucchini is the only Italian, he was born in Varese and his past as a professional rower is certainly one of the reason that pushed him to enter the competition. Matteo will undertake this race to test his own limits and to raise money for two charity organizations: Cardiac Risk in the Young and Associazione Italiana per la lotta al Neuroblastoma.

Greg Maud, from Johannesburg in South Africa, has a huge passion for extreme sports, a passion that led him to take on various challenges in his past in many different disciplines, the same passion that brought him now to participate in the Talisker 2015 alone, on board his boat “The Dog house” which is equipped with 175 W of solar panels.

Finally, the Atlantic Buoys, a team of two: Neil Blackeby, 52 a former firefighter, and Hamish Stewart, 50, both from North Cornwall, both with a long experience in rowing and water sports in general. Through their participation they aim to raise money for Children's Hospice South West.

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is considered the World’s toughest row, the participants, in teams or solo, are on their own, rowing day and night under a constant physical and psychological pressure. The difficulties caused by sleep deprivation, sea sickness, isolation and physical problems due to prolonged exposure to salt water, require a long and meticulous training as well as an incredible willpower. The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge starts on December 15th from San Sebastian de la Gomera - Canary Islands.
